A risk is better than a regret.

March 22, 2009 by Greg

Ah, finally a bit of spare time to sit down and post my first blog entry of the year, which is pretty pathetic really. Apparently some people enjoy reading my crazy thoughts.

I’ll start at the beginning: January is always a month of change and hope. It’s the time for new beginnings. And this January was no exception. A new president came to power, who gave hope and a real potential of change to millions of people all over the world.

And then I turned 17 in February. I’m pretty indifferent to birthdays really. If feels no different to being 16. But it’s just one year away from being an adult under the eyes of the law, which is pretty exciting in itself.

As you may or may not have noticed, it’s now March and the banking crisis continues with our government simply throwing money and offering no real solutions to the problem. And our currency continues to slip and slide, with some even suggesting that we scrap the Pound in favour of the Euro. Last month, The Pound reached its lowest level against the Dollar since 1985.

The value changes all the time but the products and ideas stay the same. And many forget this. Things will change. The economy will improve. People will find jobs again. We’ll live, and we’ll survive.

Launching a business in a sensitive and unpredictable economic climate is definitely hard. But if you have the funding available, you know what to do and have the motivation then it might be worth trying. And as you may know, I am now running my own business.

While it wasn’t profitable, I judge the gig at The Peel as being pretty successful. Hear me out. Profit isn’t everything. It takes time to build up a brand. People came out at the end of the night saying they had a good time, and those people have probably told their friends that they had a good time. It takes time. Some people may think I’m stupid taking a risk after I lost money on my last event. But this is different; I genuinely think that this will work.

Judging success in business is definitely a personal thing. I know I’m taking a risk. But a risk is better than a regret.

Some music I recommend:
> Frank Turner
An upbeat mixture of Kevin Devine and Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional.

> Kevin Devine
Manchester Orchestra with a hint of inspiration from Brand New.

> The Injured List
You Me At Six + Jimmy Eat World + Yellowcard (minus the violin)

> Right Away, Great Captain!
The side project of Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra)

On a semi-related note, I desperately want Yellowcard to make another album. Please?!

Looking ahead: I’m looking forward to the Easter holidays: I’m playing a laptop set at the Ministry of Sound on the 6th of April; seeing Andy Hull perform a solo gig on the 7th of April. Then seeing my favourite band, Manchester Orchestra (Andy Hull again), on the 8th. No Sunlight launches with a foam party on the 9th of April and then a birthday party will be attended on the 10th.

“We curb our speech because words are not enough.”
Goodnight.

  1. Another very good entry Greg. I completely agree with everything you say. I have complete faith that Intermission and No Sunlight will be huge successes, and I’ll do what I can to help i.e. free advertising.
