Our December sun is setting

December 25, 2008 by Greg

Ah, it’s December. The time of year where we buy presents for other people in the hope that you get what you want in return. Wouldn’t it be more logical just to buy yourself a little treat? It would save a lot of money and effort. But logic fails sometimes, I guess. Winter is a pretty horrible time of the year really. I haven’t ever really noticed how cold it gets here in the Winter, but facing a 20-25 minute walk to college on the freezing frost covered pavements really made me realise how cold it actually is. But at least we aren’t in Russia.

I guess the end of the year is a good time to reflect and say a couple of things. 2008 was a good year generally. In a nutshell: I finished at Teddington School. Went to Littlehampton with some great people. Lost some of those friends in the months that followed. Went to Malta. Got my GCSE results, passing all of them. Joined Esher College. Met a few cool people at college. And here I am, composing another shitty blog entry.

“I always have this fear that I get used to people like I do with music. Eventually, it gets kind of boring, and I stop listening to it. Then I listen to another band.”

I’d just like to wish the friends I have lost the best of luck in the future. Some things I would rather change, but who wouldn’t? We can’t change a thing but we can always prevent the same things from happening again. Sadly some people don’t want to change their selfish ways, and I can just see what will become of you. I hope you can change, I really do.

A break from college is finally here. The first term was mostly lame. Too much work for my liking but I’ve survived. I’ll be spending the Christmas holidays working on some of my own songs as well as remixing some other songs ahead of a slot I have at the very gig I mentioned last month.

New music I’m listening to this month:
Fall Out Boy - ‘Folie à Deux’
Warship - ‘Supply and Depend’
Death Cab For Cutie - ‘Narrow Stairs’ and ‘Plans’ (This isn’t new, but I have been listening to these two albums a lot)

Let’s talk 2009: I never really have set any aims or goals in the past and I think I should.

Organise at least 10 gigs
I think this one is plenty possible assuming the two gigs go well in February. There is also a money target attached to this, but I am not doing it for the money. I have booked the venues and the bands. Ordered and received the tickets. Announced the lineup and venues. As well as that, I have started organising the second and third set of gigs. This is Greg, ignoring the credit crunch. I’m hoping to prove that starting a new business isn’t mad. Check out the website if you haven’t heard about it yet: intermissionlive.com

Record and release at least three songs
I have a couple of songs ready to be recorded. Songs that feature traditional instruments rather than electronic music. I am looking for a couple of people to co-write with, so if you are interested then give me a comment.

Create a design portfolio
I never ever get around to doing this. But I really should make one. I have enough random graphics to fill a portfollio. It’s just that annoying job of putting it altogether that takes time.

How has your year been? Got any goals or aims for 2009? Give me a comment.

  1. What are you talking about, Winter’s the best time, also you’ve never been to russia, and is’nt the whole point of christmas to give to your fellow man?

  2. Phil: I am aware that I have not been to Russia. In contrast to the UK, it is a lot colder in Russia.

And Christmas is way too commercial for there to be a point.

  3. Another brilliant blog entry. Usaully I’m not a fan of blogs, but your one is suprisingly interesting.

Your pessimism about Christmas is unwarrented though. Giving has a certain satisfaction to it, as does receiving! btw, great quote - whoever thought that up was a genius! Your enigmatic messages regarding your friends are driving me crazy though. Still, some things are best left unsaid.

You have some noble goals! The best of luck with them - a year is a long time, I hope you can achieve all of them.

As for my year, it was suitably entertaining. A roller-coaster of emotions (how cliche), ranging from immense stress (GCSE Exams), social akwardness (Newquay), amusement (various meet-ups in the park), boredom (starting my part-time job) and general contentment (my life ain’t so bad).

As for my goals, I intend to
    a) Get a promotion in work, to a supervisory/deputy manageral position. I’ve already been tipped for a promotion, its only a matter of time
    b) Going to America. I need to go on the Warped Tour. End of.
    c) Solve the meaning of life. Well, maybe not LIFE life. But of my life anyway. And by that, I mean sort out Uni, work out what I want to do with my life, and try to sort out my friends ><

Well, that was an interesting comment.

and best of luck with that Steve, i personally will try to get as much free stuff as possible out of the Esher presedancy and finally get that A level in russian

  5. By far one of the interesting comments I have received on my blog to date Stephen.

Christmas is good to a point, but it’s overrated.
I think we can all agree on that. It gets very boring by the time it’s actually Christmas. After all, it’s been Christmas for 29 weeks now according to the shops.

As for my comments on my former friends: there is only so much you can say on a blog without getting a slap!

I want to visit America one day, but my plans of going to New York with the group have somewhat been halted for various reasons. But one day!

  6. Thanks Greg, I appreciate the praise, though from what I can tell, most comments have consisted of ‘first!’ or other mindless 2 word comments which I would be ashamed to be assoicated with.

I understand what you mean about Christmas - after the mindless Christmas ’sale’ on at Ryman that went on for 2 months before it, and the repetitive Christmas songs that brainwash us into buying more consumer goods, I’m quite glad Christmas is just once a year. Commercialism aside however, Christmas is good.

The avoidance of slaps is a most noble skill. I understand - I once wrote some very odd things up and the consequences were…regrettable.

A trip to New York sounds quite awesome. However, its gotta be San Francisco for me. Who knows though? At the rate I’m going, I may earn enough for a trip all across the US. £70 a week ain’t bad, and by my estimates, I should have £2500 saved up by summer.

  7. Cambridge doesn’t offer the PPE, so I’ll have to pass there. But Cuba certainly sounds tempting! I fear however that were I go to go there, I would inevitably leave as the new communist ruler.

  8. Ha you wish comrade, the job is mine, also if you where the leader why would you be leaving?

    Phil — December 25, 2008 - 10:59 pm

  9. I would leave leading my armies to crush the feeble capitalist scum that surrounds Cuba of course! Or have you gone MAD?!?!

Although Cuba has nothing on China. Occupation of Tibet FTW!

  13. Suprisingly, I too know Greg. As strange as that may sound, we do meet and talk, and is one of the reasons why I know this blog.

I wait in anticipation for January’s entry.
